What is Ozempic and what is it used for?

Ozempic is a medication containing the active substance semaglutide, which belongs to the class of incretin-like agents. This substance helps regulate insulin levels after meals and reduces the amount of sugar released into the body. Ozempic is prescribed for diabetes mellitus (diabetes).

How should I store this medication?

  • This medication is shipped refrigerated.

  • Store the pen below 30°C or in the refrigerator (2°C – 8°C). Do not freeze Ozempic.

  • Keep the pen with the pen cap on to protect it from light.

  • Keep this medication out of reach and sight of children.

Do not dispose of medications via the toilet or sink. Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of medications you no longer use. These measures help protect everyone’s safety.

What are possible side effects of Ozempic?

Besides the desired effect, this medication can cause side effects. The main side effects are:

Sometimes:

  • Nausea and diarrhea

Rarely:

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which occurs more often if combined with other glucose-lowering medications or insulin. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include hunger, mood swings, confusion, headache, fatigue, dizziness, pale face, blurred vision, shaking, sweating, and palpitations.

  • Eye damage that can lead over time to blurry or worsening vision, seeing floating spots, or blindness.

  • Gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal or stomach pain, gastritis, constipation, heartburn, bloating, and excessive flatulence.

  • Reduced appetite, which can lead to weight loss.

  • Dizziness and fatigue.

  • Gallstones, which are stones in the gallbladder and bile ducts. Usually unnoticed, but can cause severe upper abdominal pain (colic pain) with nausea and vomiting.

  • Hypersensitivity to this medicine, which can show as rash, hives, or itching. Consult your doctor if this occurs.

Very rarely:

  • Faster heartbeat.

  • Red rash at the injection site.

  • Altered taste.

  • Sudden pancreatitis has been reported with drugs similar to semaglutide. If you experience very severe, persistent abdominal pain, contact your doctor immediately.

How and when do I use Ozempic?

How?

  • The injection liquid is contained in a pen. Also read the user manual included in the packaging.

  • This medication must be injected just under the skin, into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm. Usually, you will have been trained to self-inject or someone close to you will do it.

  • If you get a red rash at the injection site, choose a different injection site each week.

When?

  • You inject Ozempic once a week at the same time.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, inject it as soon as possible, provided that the next dose is scheduled 2 or more days later. If it is less than 2 days until the next dose, skip the missed dose and inject the next dose at the planned time. Never inject two doses to make up for a missed dose.

What should I do if I take too much Ozempic?

Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
